Let’s get serious. I’m ready to talk about football.
And by football I mean a little bit of actual football and more of what it means to me in terms of food & beverage.
Since I’m on the other side of the world now and living on Pacific Standard Time, I’ll still be slaving away at work while the rest of you crack open a cold one and tune into the BCS Championship game tonight. Not to worry, I’ll catch up.
I went to Florida State and seeing as our football team can’t figure out how to not park in handicap spots, cheat on tests and avoid domestic violence charges, it seems like it might be a while before we make it to a national championship of our own. But if you know anything about college football in the South, you know that you’re either a Florida fan or a Florida State fan. Not both. It’s like wearing a Patriot’s jersey with a Cowboys hat. It’s just wrong.
In college, I dated a Florida alum and during one of the Florida/Florida State games, we each wore our respective colors – I, looking much better decked out in garnet and gold and he, looking like a fool, in orange and blue head to toe. I remember walking into the stadium up to our seats and a guy looked at us and slurred what a disappointment our children would be. Florida fan, of course.
But for whatever reason a lot of my family went to UF rather than FSU – clearly they were under the influence of the 70’s and early 80’s during college application time, probably overslept and were left with only choices from the bottom of the barrel.
Differences aside, Florida of course is my home state and, unfortunately, the University of Florida also runs in our blood. (Not mine; my blood is a beautiful shade of garnet with flakes of gold.) So with tonight’s matchup against Oklahoma, I know who I’m pulling for and though you will most certainly not see me doing the double-armed chomp or ridiculously singing, “Ain’t it great to be a Florida Gator?!?!” you will see me celebrating, as is customary, with loud speakers, cold beer and greasy food like this (essentially anything you would find at TGI Friday’s or on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives):
